Day by Day

Arrival

Day 1: Kigali

Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, you will be greeted by one of our tour guides, who will then transfer you to the hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you will go on a city tour and be introduced to the history and culture of this country. Pay a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre before making your way to the Chez Lando Hotel.

Day 2: Nyungwe National Park

Enjoy an early morning breakfast and then make your way to the western province, visiting the Ethnographic Museum en route. When you arrive in Nyungwe National Park you will enjoy a canopy walk inside the impenetrable forest. Your overnight stay will be at a lodge or the Gisakura Guesthouse.

Day 3: Nyungwe Forest National Park

Today you will visit the thirteen species of chimpanzees and other primates that reside in this forest. You will stop at the park office for a briefing before heading out on your trek, during which you will visit the amazing Kamiranzovu waterfall. The forest is comprised of at least 200 tree species and hundreds of bird species. You will also visit the Gisakura teal planation. Your overnight will be at a hotel in the forest or the Nyungwe Top View Lodge.

Day 4: Nyungwe - Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast we will make our way to Kibuye via Kivu Lake, enjoying fantastic views of the country along the way. Have lunch in Kibuye and then drive north to Volcanoes National Park. Situated in the Virunga area of dormant volcanoes that extend from east to the west, this park is home to the famous mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and other rare primate species. Your overnight will be at the Gorillas Volcanoes Hotel.

Day 5: Volcanoes National Park - Kigali

Today you will enjoy the highlight of this trip: tracking mountain gorillas. Our adventure starts with a briefing before heading out on the trek. Based on the gorilla families we are assigned to the trek will last anywhere between four to eight hours. After we find the gorillas, we will be permitted to spend one hour (at most) in their presence before descending the mountain. We shall then make our way back to Kigali for our overnight stay at the Chez Lando Hotel.

Day 6: Kigali - Akagera National Park

After breakfast we will make our way to the impressive Akagera National Park, which is comprised of wetland, savannah and woodland. This parks sits at a lower altitude compared to the rest of the country, meaning it not only warmer but drier. Some of the wildlife you will see here include giraffes, buffalos and elephants as well as an abundance of birds. If we are lucky we may have a sighting of the shoebill stork around the shores of the lake.

Day 7: Akagera National Park

Enjoy a full day of adventures in Akagera National Park. Akagera is run by the African Parks Networks and offers game drives along ancient pathways that are now being revitalized. You may also enjoy a boat cruise on one of the adjacent lakes. In the evening you will drive back to Kigali for your overnight stay at the Chez Lando Hotel.

Day 8: Kigali

After breakfast we will make our way to Bugesera, where we will visit the Ntarama and Nyatama memorials. In the afternoon we will return to Kigali. You may enjoy a city tour prior to departing based on your flight time. Afterwards you will be transferred to the airport for your jouney home.
