Mountain gorilla trekking is only done in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, making Africa the only continent where it is done in its natural habitat.

The only difference between these three African mountain gorilla experiences is that DR Congo and Rwanda are in the Virunga hills, with bamboo as the main vegetation, whereas Uganda gorillas are in tropical rain forests, with a 98% chance of seeing gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda, and DR Congo.

Uganda's mountain gorilla trekking is done in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Gorilla permits cost USD 700 for foreign nonresidents, USD 700 for foreign residents, USD 1500 for gorilla habituation, and USD 70 for East African citizens.

Rwandan mountain gorilla trekking is done in Volcanoes National Park, and a gorilla permit costs USD 1500.

DR Congo mountain gorilla trekking is done in Virunga National Park, and its permit costs USD 400.
