Kahuzi-Biega National Park was established in 1970 with the aim of protecting Grauer’s gorilla, the world’s most endangered and largest gorilla species. Kahuzi Biega National Park in Congo is the only place worldwide where travelers can spot these gorillas in their natural environment. Kahuzi Biega National Park occupies approximately 6000 km2 and protects mountain forests situated in the eastern part of the DRC, which is the most populated region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kahuzi Biega National Park got its name after the two extinct dominant volcanoes that are standing high, such as Mont Kahuzi, which stands at 3,308m above sea level, and Mont Biega, which stands at 2,790m above sea level.

Kahuzi Biega National park protects the eastern lowland gorillas, commonly known as Grauer’s gorillas, which are among the four largest gorilla subspecies left in the world. The Eastern Lowland gorillas are different from other gorillas due to their stocky bodies, short muzzles, and large hands. Aside from their size, eastern lowland gorillas, like the other three gorilla subspecies, feed primarily on fruits and other herbaceous materials.
