 Ruhija is set in the eastern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park; Tourists can enjoy mountain gorilla trekking, nature walks, bird watching, and cultural experiences. The Ruhija sector is a popular area where research is conducted.

 

Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

The Ruhija sector also offers a fully habituated gorilla family, such as the Bitukura gorilla family, the Oruzogo gorilla family, and the Kyaguriro gorilla group. The Ruhija sector has only 16 gorilla trekking permits a day, eight gorilla permits per family. Ruhija Gorilla Permits also cost $800 at the time of writing, and tourists need to book gorilla trekking permits in advance.

 

Mountain gorilla trekking can take up to three to six hours to find your allocated mountain gorilla family, but it is worth it once you are in the presence of these giant apes.

 

Guided Primate and Forest Walks

Apart from Mountain Gorillas, Bwindi protects several primate species, such as red-tailed monkeys, colobus, and Lhotse’s monkeys.  Head out on a guided walk with an experienced tourist guide, and you may be lucky enough to see these creatures in their natural environment.

 

Ruhija guided walks normally take 2-3 hours. During your forest walk you will find rare plants, bird species, and butterfly species. The Ruhija sector offers approximately 350 bird species, with 14 bird species that are only endemic to the Ruhija sector of Bwindi.

Ruhija is a top spot for bird enthusiasts; it has many endemic bird species and migratory bird species. Bird species in Ruhija include Great Blue Turaco, handsome Francolin, Ross's Turaco, Rwenzori Turaco, and various sunbirds.

When can I see mountain gorillas in the Ruhija sector?

The best time to see mountain gorillas in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is within the dry season, which happens from June July, August, September, December January, and February.  This is when the Ugandan weather is perfect, most trekking trails are passable, and the forest vegetation is less dense, making it easier to view wildlife species and photograph the gorillas.
