Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest protected area, situated in the northwestern sector of the country, and is well known for protecting a wide range of wildlife species, such as Africa’s famous Big Four crew (like lion, buffalo, elephant, and leopard). Murchison Falls is mainly characterized by a mixture of vegetation types such as riverine forests, savannah grassland, swamps, and woodlands. There are more than 500 bird species, insects, and butterflies.

Bird Watching

Murchison Falls National Park protects over 500 bird species recorded; some bird species are residential to the Albertine Rift Valley, and some species are migratory, water birds, and forest birds. Murchison Falls National Park bird species include the pied kingfisher, the rare shoebill stork, Abyssinian ground, giant kingfisher, silver bird, yellow-fronted tinker bird, black-billed barbet, veracious dove, grey-crowned crane, and many others.

Hiking in Murchison Falls National Park is done under the guidance of park ranger guides, who will lead tourists on foot from the top of the falls as you descend halfway, and then you climb back up. It is more adventurous to witness the waterfalls up close.

Chimpanzee trekking in Murchison Falls National Park

Chimpanzee trekking in Murchison Falls National Park is an exciting activity in the famous Budongo Forest, which is Mahogany’s largest forest in East Africa. Chimpanzee trekking safari here requires trekkers to wake up so early in the morning, have a quick breakfast, and then be taken for a briefing by the park rangers. Tourists are allocated to groups of 8 people. The park ranger leads each group. The chimpanzee trek usually takes between an hour and 4 hours depending on the location of these chimpanzees and other numerous factors.

The best time to visit Murchison Falls National Park is all year round, the most favorable time is from December through February, and again, June through September is another wonderful window to view animals.
